“Alejandro’s Lie”: A Tale of Romance and Revolution

Bob Van Laerhoven’s thrilling novel, Alejandro’s Lie, is an intriguing read that takes place in the fictional South American country of Terreno during the 1980s—or, at least a version of the 1980s just slightly removed from the history many of us know. Laerhoven’s fictional setting and somewhat alternative history creates a surreal atmosphere for his novel that is not unlike that found in most works of magical realism. I make this comparison specifically because the history of the genre fits perfectly with some of the novel’s core themes. Though Alejandro’s Lie is not a work of magical realism, it captures the same desire for freedom from oppression and the lasting effects of colonization—and the desire for a return to cultural roots—that is so often present in the foundational Latin American texts of that genre.

Winner of Best Political Thriller 2021 on Best.Thrillers.com, Alejandro’s Lie is a complex political thriller and romance that follows the journey of musician and jailbird Alejandro Juron as he tries to adjust to life under the dictatorship of General Pelarón who has tightened his grip on Terreno whilst Alejandro was imprisoned. Alejandro, who has become disillusioned with the possibility of revolution, must face his shortcomings and the demons of his past when he falls for Beatriz, a staunch supporter of the revolution.

Laerhoven does not shy away from the darker sides of his characters nor of the world in which they live. The actions of the revolutionaries are both justified and, at times, extreme. Alejandro and Beatriz’s relationship has moments that range from beautiful to concerningly toxic. This is no “love conquers all, perfect heroes” novel, but it is a striking and powerful piece of writing.

From a technical standpoint, as well, Laerhoven’s more than 30 years of experience shows through. Laerhoven, who has published over 45 novels that span 10 different languages, handles the large cast of characters and complex worldbuilding with ease and finess.
