Issue 5 Specialized Call & Guest Editor Announcement!

Hello wonderful people!

We’ve decided to change things up a bit for our fifth issue of For Page & Screen Magazine. As you may know, our second submission call of the year is typically a themed call. However, instead of a theme, this time we are opening Issue 5 to submissions from BIPOC authors only.

This decision comes after reflecting on the majority white authorship of our first three issues. While we love every story we have published, we want our zine to be a welcoming place for authors of all backgrounds and, as such, we’re making a point to exclusively celebrate BIPOC authors who choose to share their work with us.

Please note: There is no restriction on content! Write whatever you like about whatever you like from whatever perspective you like. This is a specialized call to celebrate authors, not a theme to restrict stories.

Furthermore, we fully recognize that the potential, unintentional, biases of our majority-white editorial team have likely contributed to the demographic bent of our past issues. In order to help ensure that this is not in any way limiting the spirit of this issue, we are absolutely thrilled (and truly honored) to welcome author, professor, and designer Claudine Thomas as special Guest Editor!

Claudine Thomas is a Philadelphia native who has spent both her personal and professional career advocating for education, the arts, and social justice issues. She studied Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. Upon graduation she served for one year as an Americorps volunteer where she designed and taught service-learning curriculum to Philadelphia K-12 students. In order to continue to develop her passion, she received her Masters degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and went on to work with the American Red Cross as Director of Youth Services. Currently, Claudine serves as the Chief Academic Officer/Academic Dean for Moore College of Art & Design. In this role she helps to establish strategic initiatives that includes leadership, academic excellence and community engagement. She also serves as the co-chair for the Association of Institutions and Colleges of Art and Design Diversity, Inclusion and Access Taskforce.

Most recently, Claudine received her MFA in Creative Writing from Arcadia University. Her short story and manuscript work specifically focuses on themes around identity, voice, and overcoming obstacles. In her free time, Claudine enjoys running, volunteering as a Board member for local arts and advocacy organizations, and spending time with her children.

You may also recognize Claudine from the 2022 AWP Panel “All the Whiles: Writing While Parenting While Black” or through her story “Hook” which appeared in For Page & Screen Issue 1: “New Beginnings.”

Submissions for Issue 5 open on July 1st and run through October 31st. For information about our submission guidelines, please head over to our Submissions page and feel free to email us with any questions!

To all authors who submitted to our fourth issue, we’re still busy reviewing submissions and will be sending out responses over the next month. If you haven’t heard from us by July 3rd, let us know!
